Front Lines by Michael Grant ( Katherine Tegen Books, 2016)
Michael Grant’s young adult novel, Front Lines, is an interesting twist on history with the premise: What if women were called up to serve during World War II? In this alternative history we follow along with three female protagonists, Rio, Frangie, and Rainy, as they volunteer for service during the War. We witness each characters’ progression from new recruit to active combat. The heroines’ journy’s come together at the end for a gripping finale set during the battle of Kasserine Pass in North Africa. The book addresses controversial issues including gender issues, the ethics of war, violence, and race. Front Lines is a gripping read that remained with me long after I’d finished. Give this book a try if you are looking for an original and compelling read. This book is Part 1 of a three part series.
