Griffin Reviews: “Hour of the Witch” by Chris Bohjahlian

Hour of the Witch by Chris Bohjahlian (‎Random House, 2021)

Just in time for Halloween, here’s a review of a suspenseful historic story that offers a new perspective on witchcraft accusations.  The Hour of the Witch is set in Boston in 1662, several decades before the infamous Salem Witch Trials of 1692. This was a dangerous time for women who did not fit the mold of colonial Puritan womanhood. Mary Deerfield learns this the hard way when she tries to escape an abusive marriage through divorce. Suspicion and judgement turn her neighbors against her and she is accused of witchcraft. As the reader, you get a front row seat to Mary’s trial and its suspenseful outcome.

To hear the end of the tale you’ll have to give this book a try! I’d highly recommend this work of historical fiction because Mary’s experience feels both relatable and realistic. Bohjalian’s work bridges challenges that women faced in the 1600s and today. You’ll definitely want to check this one out!
