Well, it’s been anything but a quiet week at Griffin Free …
Our upcoming Earth Day celebration is only about three weeks away and things are getting just a little bit crazy. Or as crazy as things can get at a library anyway!
This will be the first time the library is open for a whole day, we’re extending our hours from 10am to 8pm, quite a step for us. And we have to, given the huge amount of events and performers, inside and out, that will be attending.
Well, last week, one of those performers – Maddy Hawkes, Miss Greater Derry herself – stopped in to drop off a copy of her children’ book and to check out the library.
It was right about that moment, that all the chaos began!
You see that was also the same day that our plumber was on hand to replace the sink and cabinet in our bathroom. Our ONLY bathroom I would add, a critical factor in the tsunami of madness of the day.
Because there we were, entertaining not just the regular amount of Friday afternoon after-school patrons, not just dodging and dealing with a full scale bathroom rehab, but suddenly in walked half a dozen families, faces we’d never seen!
The group called themselves the Library Club, a group of families from the area that took it upon themselves to visit a new library each week. (Honestly, one of the best ideas I’ve heard in a long time!)
And to pick a day by coincidence when a real live Scholarship Queen was in the library, with a sparkly crown even! Miss Hawkes jumped at the moment and we set up a pop up storytime for the families.
So there we were – the plumber rattling away, newbies running around, me giving tours, new library cards being processed and a real live princess surrounded by kids.
Even our plumber took it all in stride, as lots of kids means lots of bathroom breaks. Eventually, he was able to hear the kids coming and would clear out.
And so it went. It’s tempting to say everyday is like that at the library, but we have our slow days as well. But not this day. And it’s nice to have a template to shoot for, the kind of day that moves fast, with kids shouting and laughter, and when you get to the end of the tornado, everyone understands that they made a difference.
Even the plumber. Maybe especially him because that sink looks fabulous!
